Velveeta Cheese Fondue Recipe – Make Your Day!

The ultimate comfort food is cheese. Just think of the smell of melting cheese. Add some luscious dippers and you are set to please any palate. Whether it’s a quiet candlelight dinner for two or an upbeat party for 20 guests, or even just an everyday sort of family meal, fondue is your go-to food. Fondue can serve as an appetizer, main course or dessert. Make fondue and you will make the day.

When planning your fondue, don’t forget to give the dippers some thought. There are so many choices: deli meats, small beef chunks, pork, chicken, ham, mini hot dogs, cocktail wieners, or meatballs make great meat dippers. For veggie dippers, think of boiled new potatoes, asparagus, mushrooms, stuffed olives, potato puffs, broccoli and cauliflowrettes. Don’t overlook a nice dessert fondue, either. Some great dippers for these are cakes, pineapple chunks, pear slices, strawberries and banana slices. Many of these can be bought already prepared so all you have to do is throw together the dip.

Here’s a great easy cheese fondue recipe to start with. It uses Velveeta and a green onion cheese. If Green Onion Cheese is not available in your area, Monterrey Jack and a few sprigs of diced green onion will do. This recipe also switches up the alcohol with white grape juice. The purple juice would give the fondue an unusual color, so I recommend the white.

Green Onion Velveeta Cheese Fondue

1 1/2 c. white grape juice

2 lbs. Velveeta cheese, cubed

3/4 c. green onion cheese (see below for substitutions), cubed

1/2 c. sour cream

1/2 c. butter

Place grape juice in a pan and bring to a boil (or at least allow to get really hot). Add cheeses and stir occasionally until melted. Add sour cream and butter. Cook, stirring occasionally until smooth.

If you lack a fondue pot, feel free to substitute a heavy sauce pan. Keep your heat on medium low so that it will not overheat and scorch the cheese. This will ensure a smooth even consistency and it will remain liquid enough for your dippers, without becoming a globby mess. Or, you can use a Pyrex dish sitting on top of an electric pan filled with about 1 inch of water.
